FAQ: Does the PDF Page size need to match the Book Trim Size?
When preparing a book for printing, one of the most common questions we receive is: Does the PDF page size need to match the final book trim size?
The short answer is yes, in most cases, your PDF should be set up to match the final trim size of your book. However, there are a few important details to understand, especially when your book includes images, backgrounds, or other elements that print all the way to the edge of the page.
What Is Book Trim Size?
The trim size is the final size of your printed book after it has been cut and finished. For example, common book trim sizes include:
- 5.5″ x 8.5″
- 6″ x 9″
- 8.5″ x 11″
If you are ordering a 6″ x 9″ book, the interior pages are generally designed at 6″ x 9″—unless the file requires bleed.
What If My Book Has Bleed?
If images, colored backgrounds, or other design elements extend all the way to the edge of the finished page, your PDF will usually need to include bleed.
Bleed means extending those elements slightly beyond the final trim size. This extra area is trimmed away during production and helps prevent unwanted white edges around images or backgrounds.
For example, a book with a final trim size of 6″ x 9″ may require a larger PDF page size when bleed is included. The exact specifications can depend on the printing and binding requirements, so it is always best to confirm the correct setup before submitting your files.
What About Pages Without Bleed?
If your book contains only text and images that stay within the margins and do not extend to the edge of the page, your PDF can typically match the final trim size.
It is still important to leave appropriate margins around the text and other important content. Keep in mind that the inside margin near the binding may need additional space so that text is not too close to the spine.
